Battle of Glorieta Pass

Battle context

The Battle of Glorieta Pass, fought March 26–28, 1862, in the northern New Mexico Territory, ended the Confederacy's effort to capture New Mexico Territory and extend its reach into other parts of the western United States. Although it was not the largest engagement of the New Mexico campaign, its outcome was decisive at the strategic level: Confederate forces under Sibley's command were turned back, foreclosing Confederate ambitions in the region. The battle effectively concluded the Confederate bid for the Far West, removing any realistic prospect of the Confederacy securing western territories, their resources, or potential Pacific access during the broader war.
