The Battle of Gingindlovu was fought as part of the British effort to relieve the besieged garrison at Eshowe during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Lord Chelmsford led a relief column of approximately 5,670 troops against a Zulu force of around 11,000 under Somopho kaZikhala and Dabulamanzi kaMpande. The engagement resulted in approximately 1,000 Zulu casualties, breaking the Zulu impi's ability to maintain the siege and allowing the relief column to reach Eshowe. The battle represented a significant British operational success in the coastal theater of the war, demonstrating that a well-organized British column could defeat a numerically superior Zulu force in the field and sustain momentum following the earlier disaster at Isandlwana.
