The Battle of Genola represented the last major French effort in Italy during 1799. Melas directed his Habsburg Austrian troops with greater skill than his opponent Championnet, driving the French off the field and inflicting casualties of roughly 7,600 against Austrian losses of around 2,400 — a lopsided exchange that reflected the completeness of the Austrian tactical success. The engagement marked the effective end of French offensive capacity in the Italian theater for that year, consolidating Austrian dominance in Piedmont as the campaign season closed.
