Battle context

The Battle of Genoa was a fleet action fought in the Gulf of Genoa on 13–14 March 1795 between roughly matched forces of 13 ships of the line on each side. The engagement resulted in a minor Anglo-Neapolitan victory, with two French ships of the line captured. Within the broader Mediterranean campaign of 1793–1796, the action demonstrated that the Anglo-Neapolitan fleet under Hotham could contest French naval presence in the western Mediterranean, though the limited scale of the victory left French maritime capacity largely intact. The French force under Martin suffered the heavier casualties and lost two vessels, but the outcome did not decisively alter the naval balance in the theater.
