Battle of Genale Doria

Battle context

The Battle of Ganale Doria was fought on the southern front of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and resulted in severe losses for the Ethiopian forces under Ras Desta Damtew, with approximately 5,000 casualties against an Italian force of around 20,000 men. The engagement effectively neutralized Ethiopian resistance in the south, removing a significant threat to Italian operational freedom in that theater. By eliminating Desta Damtew's army as a coherent fighting force, Italy secured its southern flank and accelerated the broader campaign toward the conquest of Ethiopia. The battle demonstrated the decisive advantage Italian airpower provided over conventionally organized Ethiopian formations, a pattern repeated across multiple fronts during the war.
