The Battle of Gargaresc on January 20, 1912 took place during the broader Italo-Turkish War, in which Italy sought to seize Ottoman Tripolitania. The engagement involved a markedly outnumbered Italian force of roughly 1,900 against an Ottoman force of approximately 8,000. Italian casualties of over 1,400 against reported Ottoman losses exceeding 8,000 suggest an exceptionally costly engagement for both sides. The battle occurred in the middle phase of the war, which ultimately concluded in October 1912 with Italy securing coastal territories including Fezzan, Cyrenaica, and Tripoli, territories that were subsequently organized into the colonies of Italian Tripolitania and Cyrenaica and later merged into Italian Libya.
