The Battle of Gagra, fought from 1 to 6 October 1992, was one of the bloodiest engagements of the War in Abkhazia and is widely considered a turning point in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict. Abkhaz secessionist forces, reinforced by CMPC militants under Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, captured the town from undermanned Georgian defenders, inflicting 429 Georgian casualties. The fall of Gagra was accompanied by an outbreak of ethnic cleansing of the local Georgian population, intensifying the humanitarian and political stakes of the conflict. Suspicion that Russian commanders aided the attacking force produced a significant deterioration of Georgian-Russian relations, adding a broader geopolitical dimension to what had begun as an internal secessionist struggle.
