Battle context

The Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro, fought 3–5 May 1811, decided the fate of Almeida during the Peninsular War. Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese Army blocked Marshal Masséna's Army of Portugal from relieving the besieged city, effectively sealing Almeida's fall and frustrating French operational objectives in the frontier region. The engagement underscored the limits of French command coordination: poor cooperation between Masséna and his subordinates compounded the difficulty of dislodging a defender holding formidable high ground and fortified positions. Wellington himself acknowledged the margin was narrow, noting that Napoleon's presence might have reversed the outcome — a candid measure of how closely the allied position was tested despite the numerical advantage the French held on the field.
