Significance

At Fuengirola, a Franco-Polish garrison of roughly 457 men repulsed and routed an Anglo-Spanish force of approximately 2,500 under Lord Blayney, demonstrating that dispersed Napoleonic garrisons on the Andalusian coast could hold against numerically superior Allied expeditionary forces. The outcome secured the Sohail Castle position and the town of Alhaurín el Grande for French-aligned forces, frustrating British efforts to exploit coastal footholds in southern Spain during the Peninsular War. The defeat also resulted in the capture of Lord Blayney himself, removing a senior British commander from the theater.

Tactics

The Franco-Polish defenders fought the engagement as a coordinated , with the Sohail Castle under Młokosiewicz and the Alhaurín el Grande garrison under Bronisz moving out from their respective positions to strike the Anglo-Spanish force. By taking the offensive from fortified bases rather than passively defending, the two garrison elements combined to rout a force more than five times their combined strength.
