Battle context

The Battle of Friedberg on 24 August 1796 occurred during Moreau's eastward advance on the south side of the Danube, forming part of the broader French push into southern Germany during the War of the First Coalition. The engagement produced around 1,800 Austrian casualties when Moreau's substantially larger force of 59,000 caught an isolated Austrian infantry regiment and destroyed it. The action was a localized but damaging blow to Latour's army of roughly 30,000, reducing his already inferior numbers and illustrating the vulnerability of dispersed Habsburg detachments to a French force capable of concentrating rapidly along its line of advance. In the context of the 1796 campaign, such attrition of isolated units degraded Austrian capacity to mount a coherent defense of Bavaria.
