Battle of Freiburg

Significance

The Battle of Freiburg, fought over three days on 3, 5, and 9 August 1644, was among the bloodiest engagements of the Thirty Years' War. A French force of 16,000 under Condé and Turenne moved to retake Freiburg im Breisgau after the town had surrendered to a Bavarian army under Franz von Mercy and Johann von Werth. Despite outnumbering the Imperial-Bavarian force of 13,000, the French suffered approximately 8,000 casualties against around 4,000 on the opposing side, and neither side secured a clear advantage. The scale of French losses relative to the force engaged illustrated the attritional character that the war's later campaigns had assumed in the western theater. The failure to retake Freiburg decisively left the strategic situation in the region unresolved, while the disproportionate casualties sustained by the French underscored the defensive strength of Mercy's position and the costs of the offensive action Condé and Turenne were compelled to mount.
