Battle context

The two battles at Fontenay-le-Comte in May 1793 marked a significant Royalist success during the early phase of the War in the Vendée. While the first engagement on 16 May held the town against the insurgent army, the second battle on 25 May reversed that outcome, ending in a Vendean victory. With a Royalist force of 35,000 against a Republican army of 14,000 under Alexis Chalbos, the engagement produced sharply asymmetric casualties — 4,000 Republican losses against roughly 1,000 Vendean — reflecting the depth of the Royalist advantage in this action. The fall of Fontenay-le-Comte demonstrated the Republic's difficulty in suppressing the Vendean uprising in its early months and reinforced the insurgency's capacity to contest and seize key towns in the region.
