Battle context

The Battle of Fombio, fought between 7 and 9 May 1796, marked the decisive strategic point of the 1796 Italian campaign. Bonaparte's crossing of the Po at Piacenza placed the French Army of Italy directly in Beaulieu's rear, simultaneously threatening Milan and severing the Austrian line of communications. Faced with this double threat, the Austrian army under Beaulieu was compelled to withdraw eastward. The maneuver effectively unhinged the Austrian defensive position in northern Italy without requiring a frontal engagement of equivalent scale, and the French numerical advantage of roughly 11,500 against 5,000 Austrian troops — combined with Austrian casualties of over 1,500 — accelerated the collapse of Beaulieu's ability to hold the line. The action set the conditions for French operational dominance across Lombardy in the weeks that followed.
