Battle of Fanfa

Battle context

The Battle of Fanfa, fought early in the Farroupilha Revolution, resulted in a negotiated withdrawal for Riograndense forces under Bento Gonçalves. The engagement's lasting consequence was not its tactical outcome but the breach of its own terms: rebel troops who surrendered their arms under an agreement to withdraw freely were instead imprisoned, and Gonçalves himself was captured. The episode, known also as the Betrayal of Fanfa, removed the principal Riograndense commander from the field at an early and critical stage of the war. The imprisonment of Gonçalves deprived the Piratini Republic of its leading figure precisely when the nascent revolt was consolidating, making the battle a significant setback for the separatist cause regardless of the nominal terms under which fighting ceased.
