Battle of Famaillá

Battle context

The Battle of Famaillá was a Federal Party victory over the Unitarian forces of General Juan Lavalle, commanded by former Uruguayan president Manuel Oribe. The engagement pitted roughly equal forces against one another — approximately 2,200 Federal troops against around 2,000 Unitarians — and resulted in a defeat for Lavalle's army. The outcome formed part of the broader Federal consolidation during the Argentine Civil Wars, in which Federalist commanders sought to suppress Unitarian resistance across the interior provinces.
