The Battle of Eutaw Springs, fought on September 8, 1781, was the last major engagement of the American Revolutionary War in the Carolinas. Forces under Nathanael Greene and Alexander Stewart each suffered substantial casualties — American losses ranging from 139 to 375 and British losses from 351 to 420 out of roughly comparable forces of around 2,000 men per side. Both sides claimed victory, a disputed outcome that reflected the inconclusive nature of the fighting. As the final large-scale action in the Carolina theater, Eutaw Springs effectively marked the end of sustained conventional campaigning in the region, ceding operational momentum in the South without delivering a clear decision to either party.
