Battle context

The Battle of Estero Bellaco stands as one of the bloodiest engagements of the Paraguayan War. Fighting on May 2, 1866, left the Paraguayan Army with roughly 2,000 dead and wounded and an additional 300 men taken prisoner by Triple Alliance forces. Allied casualties approached a similar scale, with the Uruguayan contingent under General Venancio Flores suffering the heaviest losses and accounting for the vast majority of allied deaths. The scale of attrition on both sides underscored the ferocity of the ground campaign as the Triple Alliance—comprising Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay—pressed into Paraguayan-contested territory.
