Battle context

The Battle of Erbach occurred during the opening phase of the 1800 campaign in Germany, as French and Habsburg forces contested control along the Rhine frontier. Facing an Austrian force more than twice their size—including a substantial cavalry component of 12,000—the outnumbered French under Sainte-Suzanne held their main positions for twelve hours against vigorous Austrian pressure. The arrival of St. Cyr's corps compelled the Austrians under Baron Pál Kray to withdraw, denying them a decisive tactical success despite their numerical advantage. The engagement demonstrated that French forces could absorb sustained pressure from a superior enemy and maintain cohesion until reinforced, contributing to the broader French effort to stabilize and then advance their position in the German theater of the War of the Second Coalition.
