Battle context

The Battle of Empress Augusta Bay was a night naval engagement fought in support of Allied landings at Cape Torokina, the opening action of the Bougainville campaign. The landings and the naval battle that protected them served Operation Cartwheel, the broader Allied strategy designed to isolate and neutralize the major Japanese base at Rabaul by establishing a beachhead on Bougainville from which an airfield could be constructed. Securing that beachhead extended the Allied ring around Rabaul and continued the progressive tightening that characterized the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns through late 1943. Japanese casualties in the engagement ranged between 198 and 658 personnel, reflecting the cost of the failed Japanese effort to disrupt the landings.
