Battle of Elandsfontein

Significance

The Battle of Elandsfontein arose directly from British logistical needs during the First Boer War. Operating near Pretoria, British forces depended heavily on horses for transport across the South African plains, making hay collection a recurring operational requirement. A forage expedition on 11 January 1881 was intercepted by Boer fighters, who seized a mowing machine, a wagon, and several mules — a modest but pointed demonstration that British supply operations in the region were vulnerable. The follow-on expedition of 16 January 1881 was dispatched to a suspected Boer laager at Elandsfontein ridge to reassert control of the area or destroy the camp. The engagement illustrates the extent to which logistical security, rather than set-piece maneuver, defined much of the day-to-day contest during the First Boer War around Pretoria.
