Battle of Edchera

Significance

The Battle of Edchera took place during the Ifni War, a conflict initiated by Moroccan insurgent incursions into Spanish West Africa beginning in November 1957. The war, sometimes called the Forgotten War in Spain, centered on pressure against Spanish territorial holdings in the region and culminated in the abortive siege of Sidi Ifni. At Edchera, a Moroccan force of approximately 500 faced a Spanish contingent of around 350, making it one of the larger engagements of a conflict that remained largely obscured in Spanish public memory. The battle's place within the broader campaign reflects the scale of Moroccan pressure on Spanish positions during the peak operational period of early 1958.
