Battle of Ebro River

Significance

The Battle of Ebro River was a naval engagement fought in spring 217 BC near the mouth of the Ebro River in Iberia, in which a Roman fleet of 35 ships under Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus defeated a Carthaginian fleet of approximately 40 quinqueremes commanded by Himilco. The Carthaginian loss of 29 ships effectively stripped Carthage of naval control around Iberia, disrupting Hasdrubal Barca's joint expedition aimed at destroying the Roman base north of the Ebro. Within the broader context of the Second Punic War, the victory secured Roman naval dominance in Iberian waters and protected the Roman foothold in the peninsula. The political consequences extended beyond the fleet: the Roman victory enhanced Roman prestige among local populations, triggering rebellion among some Iberian tribes that had been under Carthaginian control, thereby weakening Carthaginian authority in Iberia at a critical stage of the war.
