Battle context

The Battle of Dürenstein was fought on 11 November 1805 during the War of the Third Coalition, with a French force of approximately 14,000 facing a Russian force of roughly 24,000 under Kutuzov, Miloradovich, and Dokhturov. The engagement produced substantial casualties on both sides — approximately 2,500 French and 2,000 Russian — reflecting the intensity of the fighting despite the numerical disparity. As part of the broader campaign that culminated in the French strategic dominance of 1805, the battle illustrated the operational difficulty Napoleon's corps commanders faced when isolated from mutual support, with Mortier's force exposed against a larger Russian army in the Wachau valley corridor along the Danube, some 73 kilometers upstream from Vienna.
