Battle context

The Battle of Driefontein on 10 March 1900 was fought as part of the British offensive in the first half of 1900 aimed at capturing the capitals of both Boer republics, Bloemfontein and Pretoria. Coming directly after the Battle of Poplar Grove, Driefontein formed a sequential engagement in a sustained British advance under Lord Roberts. The British force of approximately 10,000 troops faced a Boer force estimated between 1,500 and 6,000 men under Christiaan De Wet. British casualties of around 351–361 against approximately 102 Boer losses indicate the defenders contested the advance at significant cost to the attackers, though the broader offensive trajectory toward the Boer capitals continued. The battle represents one of the engagements through which British forces progressively reduced organized Boer resistance in the field during this phase of the war, before the conflict transitioned into its prolonged guerrilla phase.
