Battle context

The Battle of Dol, fought over three days and two nights around Dol-de-Bretagne, Pontorson, and Antrain, constituted one of the heaviest Republican defeats of the War in the Vendée. Facing a Republican force of 20,000, the Vendéen army of 30,000 first repelled the Republican offensive against Dol-de-Bretagne, then seized the initiative with a counterattack that stormed Antrain, where the Republican headquarters was located. The collapse of the Republican position forced a retreat to Rennes, demonstrating that the Vendéen forces retained the capacity for sustained offensive operations despite the pressures of the wider campaign. The engagement, involving senior commanders on both sides including Kléber, Marceau, Westermann, La Rochejaquelein, and Stofflet, underscored the difficulty the Republic faced in suppressing the insurrection even when committing substantial regular forces.
