Battle context

The Battle of Dogger Bank (1781) was a naval engagement during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War between a British squadron under Hyde Parker and a Dutch squadron under Johan Zoutman. The two forces, with Britain fielding approximately 3,500 personnel and the Dutch Republic approximately 2,600, sustained comparable casualties, with British losses ranging from 108 to 339 and Dutch losses from 140 to 400. The engagement is one of the principal fleet actions of the conflict, which pitted Britain against the Dutch Republic at a moment when British naval commitments were already stretched across multiple theaters. No decisive result is recorded, reflecting the broader indecisive character of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, a conflict that weakened the Dutch Republic's commercial and naval standing without producing clear battlefield resolution.
