Battle context
The Battle of Dobro Pole opened the Vardar Offensive on the Balkan Front in September 1918, with Serbian, French, and Greek forces striking Bulgarian-held trench lines at Dobro Pole. The assault, preceded by an intensive artillery preparation, broke through Bulgarian positions over four days and produced severe effects on Bulgarian unit cohesion. Mass desertions followed, degrading the Central Powers' ability to hold the Balkan front. The collapse of Bulgarian resistance at Dobro Pole set the conditions for Bulgaria's subsequent withdrawal from the war, making it one of the first Central Powers states to seek an armistice in 1918 and contributing to the unraveling of the alliance on its southern flank.
