Battle context

The Battle of Djebok was part of the broader French-led military intervention in Mali that began in January 2013, targeting armed Islamist groups that had seized control of northern Mali. The engagement pitted French and Malian armed forces against the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, an Al-Qaeda offshoot, in the Djebok area. French force strength in the engagement was estimated between 200 and 460 personnel. The battle represented the ongoing effort to dislodge and neutralize jihadist factions operating across northern Mali following the initial phase of the intervention.
