Battle context

The Battle of Dervenakia, fought on 6–8 August 1822, resulted in a Greek victory over an Ottoman force that significantly outnumbered the defenders. The Ottoman army under Mahmud Dramali Pasha numbered roughly 20,000 troops against a Greek force of 8,000–10,000 under Kolokotronis, Ypsilantis, Papaflessas, and Nikitaras. Ottoman casualties amounted to 20,000, indicating the near-total destruction of Dramali Pasha's force. The engagement stands as one of the most consequential Greek military successes of the War of Independence, eliminating a major Ottoman offensive capacity and bolstering the Greek position in the Peloponnese during a critical phase of the conflict.
