The Battle of Denain on 24 July 1712 produced a decisive French victory under Marshal Villars against the Dutch and Austrian forces commanded by Prince Eugene of Savoy. The disparity in casualties — approximately 2,100 French against an estimated 6,500–8,000 for the opposing side — indicates the scale of the defeat inflicted on the allied force, which outnumbered the French with a recorded strength of 100,000 against 70,000. Within the War of the Spanish Succession, the engagement came at a critical juncture when France had been under sustained military pressure across multiple theaters.
