Dead Buffalo Lake was a skirmish in the Dakota Territory in July 1863 during the broader Sioux Wars, pitting U.S. Army forces under Henry Hastings Sibley against a combined force of Santee, Yankton, Yanktonai, and Teton Sioux that included prominent leaders Inkpaduta, Sitting Bull, and Gall. The engagement involved substantially sized forces on both sides, with over 2,000 U.S. troops facing roughly 1,600 Sioux warriors. The Sioux objective was limited and logistical — capturing the army's pack train — rather than a bid for decisive battlefield victory. Their failure to seize the supply train and subsequent withdrawal left U.S. forces in control of the field, sustaining the momentum of Sibley's 1863 Dakota expedition without recorded casualties on either side.
