The Battle of Curupaity was a significant reverse for the allied Brazilian, Argentine, and Uruguayan coalition prosecuting the Paraguayan War. A combined force of some 20,000 assailants attacked a Paraguayan defensive position held by roughly 5,000 men, resulting in allied casualties exceeding 4,000. The scale of the defeat demonstrated that Paraguayan fortified lines could repel numerically superior forces, prolonging the war and complicating allied operational planning along the river axis.
