Significance
The Battle of Cos, fought around 261 BC or as late as 255 BC, was a naval engagement between the Antigonid and Ptolemaic fleets in which Antigonus II Gonatas defeated a Ptolemaic force, possibly commanded by admiral Patroclus under Ptolemy II. The battle has traditionally been interpreted as severely damaging Ptolemaic control of the Aegean within the broader contest of the Syrian Wars, though this assessment has been contested by scholars. Antigonus's subsequent dedication of his flagship to Apollo indicates the significance he attached to the victory.
