Overview

The Second Battle of Colenso, also known as the Battle of Colenso, was the third and final battle fought during the Black Week of the Second Boer War. It was fought between British and Boer forces from the independent South African Republic and Orange Free State in and around Colenso, Natal, South Africa on 15 December 1899.

Significance

The Battle of Colenso was the third and final engagement of Black Week, a sequence of defeats that marked one of the most damaging periods for British arms in the Second Boer War. Fought between a British force of 14,000 under Redvers Buller and approximately 4,500 Boer fighters under Louis Botha, the action resulted in British casualties and compounded the shock of the preceding Black Week reverses. The concentration of three defeats within a single week forced a reassessment of British strategy and command in South Africa, contributing to changes in senior leadership and the broader conduct of the war.
