The Japanese occupation of Christmas Island in March 1942 was secured without ground resistance, facilitated by a mutiny among British Indian Army soldiers against their British officers. This internal collapse of the garrison removed any prospect of a contested defense, allowing Imperial Japanese forces under Shōji Nishimura to occupy the island with approximately 850 troops. The seizure extended Japanese control in the Indian Ocean region during a period of rapid Imperial expansion following Pearl Harbor. The engagement also demonstrated the fragility of colonial garrison arrangements under the pressures of the wider Pacific and Asian war.
