Battle context

The Battle of Chillianwala, fought in January 1849 during the Second Anglo-Sikh War, stands as one of the bloodiest engagements in the history of the British East India Company. Facing a Sikh force under Sher Singh, the British under Hugh Gough suffered 1,651 casualties without achieving a decisive result. Both armies held their positions at the conclusion of fighting, and both sides claimed victory. The indeterminate outcome constituted a strategic check to immediate British ambitions in Punjab, halting the momentum of what had been an aggressive campaign of expansion. The shock to British military prestige was significant: a force of around 12,000 failing to break a Sikh army estimated at up to 20,000 unsettled confidence in Company military dominance in India and heightened scrutiny of British command in the subcontinent.
