Battle of Chiayi

Battle context

The Battle of Chiayi was an engagement during the Japanese invasion of Taiwan in 1895, fought under the command of Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa. Japanese forces numbering approximately 9,000 confronted a defending force of around 3,600, and the battle resulted in a Japanese victory at a cost of roughly 200 casualties. As one of the engagements in Japan's campaign to assert control over Taiwan following its cession under the Treaty of Shimonoseki, the outcome at Chiayi contributed to the progressive suppression of organized resistance on the island.
