Battle of Chemillé

Battle context

The Battle of Chemillé on April 11, 1793 resulted in a Vendéen victory over a Republican force of 4,000 troops, inflicting approximately 400 casualties on the attackers while sustaining between 200 and 600 of their own. The successful defense of Chemillé demonstrated the Vendéens' early capacity to repel organized Republican assaults, reinforcing their hold over contested territory in the region during the opening phase of the war. Coming in the spring of 1793 when the uprising was still consolidating, the outcome bolstered the insurgency's ability to maintain control of towns against conventional military pressure.
