The Battle of Chancellorsville, fought April 30 – May 6, 1863, was the principal engagement of the Chancellorsville campaign and a major engagement of the American Civil War. The Union force under Joseph Hooker numbered more than twice the Confederate strength under Robert E. Lee. Union casualties stood at 17,287 against Confederate losses of 12,764, reflecting substantial cost to both sides despite the disparity in force size.
