Cerro Corá ended the Paraguayan War as its final major engagement, fought approximately 454 kilometres northeast of Asunción. The battle's defining outcome was the death of Paraguayan president Francisco Solano López at the hands of the Imperial Brazilian Army, ending the personal leadership that had sustained Paraguay's resistance throughout the conflict. With López's death, organized Paraguayan resistance collapsed, concluding a war that had drawn in Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay and devastated Paraguay's population and territory. Brazilian forces numbered 2,600; Paraguayan casualties in the engagement ran between 200 and 245.
