Battle of Ceresole

Overview

The Battle of Ceresole took place on 14 April 1544, during the Italian War of 1542–1546, outside the village of Ceresole d'Alba in the Piedmont region of Italy. A French army, commanded by François de Bourbon, Count of Enghien, defeated the combined forces of the Holy Roman Empire and Spain, commanded by Alfonso d'Avalos d'Aquino, Marquis del Vasto. Despite having inflicted substantial casualties on the Imperial troops, the French subsequently failed to exploit their victory by taking Milan.

Significance

The Battle of Ceresole, fought outside the village of Ceresole d'Alba in Piedmont on 14 April 1544, produced the most lopsided casualty exchange of the Italian War of 1542–46. François de Bourbon's French army, outnumbered by a force of 19,000–20,000 Imperial and Spanish troops under Alfonso d'Avalos, inflicted between 9,000 and 10,000 casualties on the enemy while sustaining only 1,000–1,500 of its own — a disparity that underscores the completeness of the tactical defeat imposed on d'Avalos's command. Despite this outcome, the French were unable to convert battlefield success into strategic gain. The failure to follow the victory with an advance on Milan meant that Ceresole decided nothing of lasting consequence in the wider contest over northern Italy. The battle thus stands as an instance in which a decisive tactical result failed to translate into operational or political advantage, leaving the fundamental balance of the Italian War unchanged.
