Battle context
The Battle of Castiglione was one of four major French victories in the Italian theater during the War of the First Coalition, alongside Bassano, Arcole, and Rivoli. Bonaparte's Army of Italy, though outnumbered, inflicted roughly 3,000 casualties on Wurmser's Habsburg force against approximately 1,300 French losses, driving the Austrians back along a line of hills to Borghetto and across the Mincio River. The defeat compelled the Habsburg army to withdraw beyond the Mincio, relieving immediate pressure on the French position in northern Italy and sustaining Bonaparte's operational momentum in the region near Lake Garda.
