Battle context
At Castalla on 13 April 1813, Murray's Anglo-Spanish-Sicilian force repelled repeated French attacks and compelled Suchet's III Corps to withdraw, inflicting some 1,400 casualties on a French force of roughly 13,500 men while defending with approximately 17,000 troops. The engagement confirmed that Suchet's Army of Valencia and Aragon could not dislodge the Allied presence in southeastern Spain. Within the broader Peninsular War, this checked French offensive capacity in the region at a moment when Napoleon's armies were already under pressure across multiple fronts, helping to sustain Allied operations along the Mediterranean coast.
