Battle context
The Battle of Castalla resulted in the repulse of Marshal Suchet's French Army of Valencia and Aragon by an Anglo-Spanish-Sicilian force under Lieutenant General Sir John Murray. By holding their hilltop position at Castalla and forcing the French III Corps to retreat, Murray's command denied Suchet a potentially decisive blow against Allied forces operating along Spain's eastern coast. The engagement took place within the broader Peninsular War context, where French control of Valencia and Aragon was already under sustained pressure. A successful French attack could have stabilized Suchet's position in the region; the repulse instead reinforced Allied operational continuity in the eastern theater. Castalla lies approximately 35 kilometers north-northwest of Alicante, placing it within a corridor critical to French hold on southeastern Spain.
