Battle of Casma

Significance

The Battle of Casma was a naval engagement fought in the bay of Casma, off the Peruvian coast, during the War of the Confederation between Chile and the Peru–Bolivian Confederation. Three Chilean Navy ships under Roberto Simpson met four privateer vessels fighting on behalf of the Confederation, commanded by Jean Blanchet. Although both sides claimed victory in the aftermath, Chilean forces effectively defeated the larger Confederation flotilla. The engagement demonstrated Chile's capacity to project naval power along the Peruvian coast, well north of the main port of Callao, underlining the maritime dimension of a war more often characterized by its land campaigns.
