Battle context

Casal Novo was one of several rear-guard actions fought during Masséna's withdrawal from Portugal in March 1811. The engagement illustrated the dangers inherent in pursuit operations: despite the French force being outnumbered, the recklessness of the British commander Sir William Erskine produced casualties of 155 in the Light Division — a costly result for the pursuing side. Ney's management of the French rear guard across this series of actions slowed and punished Wellington's pursuit, buying time for the retreating army. The episode contributed to the broader pattern of the Peninsular War in which disciplined rear-guard fighting by the French could inflict disproportionate losses even in defeat.
