The Battle of Cañada Strongest, fought May 10–25, 1934, stands as the greatest Bolivian military victory of the Chaco War. Three Bolivian divisions under Enrique Peñaranda ambushed and defeated Paraguayan forces under José Félix Estigarribia, inflicting approximately 1,500 Paraguayan casualties. Within the broader contest for the Gran Chaco, the engagement represented a rare reversal for Paraguay, which had largely held the operational initiative against Bolivia. The scale of the ambush and the defeat of Paraguayan forces demonstrated the capacity of Bolivian divisions to coordinate effectively and achieve decisive local results, even as the overall war would ultimately end in Paraguayan strategic advantage at the 1935 armistice.
