Significance
The Battle of Çamurlu, fought on 5 July 1413, was the final engagement of the Ottoman Interregnum, the civil war that had fractured the Ottoman state since the defeat and capture of Bayezid I at the Battle of Ankara in 1402. The conflict at Çamurlu pitted two surviving sons of Bayezid I — Musa Çelebi and Mehmed Çelebi — against one another, with Stefan Lazarević fighting on Mehmed's side. Mehmed's victory ended more than a decade of dynastic contestation and allowed him to reunite the Ottoman Empire as Mehmed I, restoring centralized Ottoman rule after a period in which competing princes had controlled different regions of Anatolia and the Balkans. The battle thus resolved the succession crisis that the Timurid intervention had precipitated and set the conditions for the subsequent reconsolidation of Ottoman power in the fifteenth century.
