Battle of Camperdown

Significance

The Battle of Camperdown was the most significant engagement between British and Batavian forces during the French Revolutionary Wars. Admiral Adam Duncan's Royal Navy North Sea Fleet achieved a complete victory over Vice-Admiral Jan Willem de Winter's Batavian Navy, capturing eleven enemy ships without losing any of its own. The scale of the Batavian defeat — 3,775 casualties — effectively neutralized the Batavian fleet as a meaningful threat in the North Sea, removing a potential avenue through which French Revolutionary power could be projected against Britain by sea during this phase of the conflict.
