The Battle of Calumpit, fought in Bulacan from April 25–27, 1899, marked another direct engagement between U.S. forces under General Arthur MacArthur Jr. and General Antonio Luna's main Philippine Republican force. Coming shortly after the fall of Malolos on March 31, 1899, and following the Battle of Quingua, the fighting at the Bagbag and Pampanga Rivers represented a continuation of U.S. pressure against the organized military resistance of the Philippine Republic. Luna's force of approximately 3,000 again faced the combined U.S. command that included Generals Wheaton, Hale, and Funston. U.S. casualties ranged from 127 to as many as 700, reflecting the intensity of the resistance. The engagement was part of the broader American campaign to dismantle Philippine Republican military cohesion in central Luzon following the capture of the revolutionary capital.
